What is the benefit of having employees screened this way? Especially when there's a data breach exposing SSN's, it begs the question of whether such third party data collection was necessary in the first place.
It covers things like criminal background, education verification, immigration status, validation of driver's license (think couriers, etc), professional licenses, credit reports, DOT drug testing, etc.
The problematic one to me is the criminal background. They can report arrests rather than convictions, misdemeanors or not, juvenile records, etc. I like the way Australia does these. A govt agency does the check, and they only send the employer back a 'yes' or 'no', based on the background and the job position.
